The IHBC’s fifth IHBC Research for Practice Digest has been issued to networks and subscribers. It features Prof. Oriel Prizeman of the Welsh School of Architecture, who leads a fully recognised IHBC course, and Dr Nicola Emmerson, Reader in Conservation, both at Cardiff University, and co-leads on the PERFFORM project, which is an exciting collaboration in generating new conservation resources.

Welcome to the IHBC’s fifth issue of its Research for Practice Digest. For this issue we feature Professor Oriel Prizeman of the Welsh School of Architecture, who leads the MSc in Sustainable Building Conservation, a fully recognised IHBC course, and Dr Nicola Emmerson, Reader in Conservation, Director of Postgraduate Research in Archaeology at Cardiff University.

Oriel is co-lead on the PERFFORM project, which is an exciting collaboration in generating new conservation resources between the Centre for Sustainable Building Conservation in the Welsh school of Architectureand the Conservation team in Archaeology at Cardiff. The project, led by Dr Nicola Emmerson, uses the latest scientific techniques to understand how environmental factors can impact historic buildings and collections, offering guidance for their preservation.

Funded by the UKRI Arts and Humanities Research Council’s (AHRC) Research Infrastructure for Conservation and Heritage Science (RICHeS) programme, it enables Cardiff University’s PERFFORM facility to house state-of-the-art equipment, which allows users to examine historic buildings and the environmental conditions within them. They will be able to model the environment’s impact on structures and artefacts, to ensure they last for generations to come, as well as to consider the suitability of energy efficiency measures.
