Four vertical steel shafts create a composite structural system that diminishes incrementally, quadrant by quadrant, until a single triangular prism is left. The triangular framework transfers structural loads to the four shafts. This innovative system solves the site-specific problem of being able to resist high winds, as well as eliminating the need for internal vertical supports. This meant less steel was used than for a typical building of such size. Four vertical steel shafts create a composite structural system </ins>that <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">diminishes incrementally, quadrant </ins>by <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">quadrant, until </ins>a <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">single triangular prism is left. The triangular framework transfers structural loads </ins>to the <ins class="diffchange diffchange-inline">four shafts. This innovative system solves the site-specific problem of being able to resist high winds, as well as eliminating the need for internal vertical supports. This meant less steel was used than for a typical building of such size. The building is clad with glass curtain walls</ins>.

−

The <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">triangular framework works to transfer </del>the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">structural weight onto the four shafts. This innovative system solves the site-specific problem of being able to resist high-velocity winds</del>, <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">as well as eliminating </del>the <del class="diffchange diffchange-inline">need for internal vertical supports. This allowed for less steel to be used than was thought typical for a building of such size.
= Introduction =

The Bank of China Tower is a skyscraper located in the Central and Western District of Hong Kong and is arguably the city’s most iconic building. It houses the headquarters for the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited.

It was designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect I.M. Pei and L.C. Pei of I.M. Pei and Partners and completed in 1989.

With a height of 72 storeys and 315 m (1,033.5 ft), with two masts reaching 367.4 m (1,205.4 ft), it was the tallest building in Asia from 1989 to 1992. It was the first building outside the United States to surpass the 305 m (1,000 ft) mark, although has since been overtaken by other skyscrapers in Hong Kong.

The Bank owners occupy the top four and bottom 19 storeys of the building, while the others are leased out. On the 43rd floor is a small observation deck which is open to the public.

It is been featured in the blockbuster films ‘Battleship’, ‘Star Trek: Voyager’, and ‘Transformers: Age of Extinction’.

= Design and construction =

[[File:BOCtower2.jpg]]

The high-tech structural expressionism of the design provides the building with its distinctiveness. The design initially caused some controversy for being the only major building in Hong Kong to have bypassed the convention of consulting with feng shui practitioners on design matters. In particular, concern was raised around the sharp edges of the building and numerous ‘X’ shapes in the original design, invoking negative symbolism. As a result of this controversy, Pei modified the design prior to construction.

Pei’s design drew inspiration from bamboo shoots to symbolise prosperity and strength. Four vertical steel shafts comprise the tower, creating a composite structural system that diminishes incrementally, quadrant by quadrant, until a single triangular prism is left.

The design had to solve the problems raised by the typhoon zone location as well as building to the required height while keeping to a fairly tight budget. Pei’s solution was an asymmetrical tower that addressed both skyline and street.

The tower is set back from the street, creating an attractive pedestrian environment that is surrounded by a broad promenade and flanked by water gardens that are intended to provide shelter from the urban congestion and noise.

The triangular framework works to transfer the structural weight onto the four shafts. This innovative system solves the site-specific problem of being able to resist high-velocity winds, as well as eliminating the need for internal vertical supports. This allowed for less steel to be used than was thought typical for a building of such size. The building is clad with glass curtain walls.

Construction began in March 1985, nearly two years later than planned. It was topped out in 1989 and first occupied in June 1990.

Some locals have given the tower the nickname ‘One Knife’ owing to the perception of the building’s profile resembling that of a meat cleaver from certain angles.
