Similar alternatives terms include; ‘So Far As Is Reasonably Practicable’ (SFAIRP) and ‘As Low As Reasonably Achievable’ (ALARA).

−	~~The term~~ relates to the time, cost and effort required to control a risk balanced against the severity of the risk. ‘As Low As Reasonably Practicable’ (ALARP) is a term that is commonly used in safety management contexts to refer to residual risk in the workplace which must be reduced to as low a level as it reasonably practicable. Alternatives that may be used are ‘So Far As Is Reasonably Practicable’ (SFAIRP) and ‘As Low As Reasonably Achievable’ (ALARA).

The term relates to the time, cost and effort required to control a risk balanced against the severity of the risk. When a risk has gotten to the point where it can be deemed to be ALARP, the cost and effort involved in reducing the risk still further would be disproportionate to the amount of benefit that would be gained. Therefore, it involves common sense and judgement on the part of duty-holder who must be able to illustrate that it would be grossly disproportionate to the benefits to try reducing the risk further.

The concept of ‘reasonably practicable’ is flexible and based upon best practice, as part of the general duties of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act (1974). A definition was laid down by the Court of Appeal in the case of ‘Edwards v. National Coal Board’ [1949]:
