An abutment is a structural component used to support the lateral pressure for engineering spans. In bridge and dam construction, an abutment is the part of the substructure at the end of the span on which the superstructure rests.

As well as being used to resist and transfer lateral loads, abutments are used to transfer loads to the foundations from the superstructure, and support one end of an approach slab.

Abutments are found at each end of single-span bridges, providing vertical and lateral support, while multi-span bridges need piers to support the unsupported ends of spans instead. For dams, abutments are typically used on either side of the valley or gorge. As a means of resisting the lateral forces of a vault, abutments are also found supporting one side of an arch.
