Pitch/Pitch

In December 2016, the architects AL_A unveiled a new concept for stackable football pitches.

The idea is a response to the lack of space in inner city areas for sporting activities. AL_A suggest it could help with community relations and enable more affordable space for adults who want an informal game of football after work.

Pitch/Pitch is a series of stackable 5-a-side football pitches that can be constructed on derelict or temporarily vacant sites. It is a temporary installation which is both quick and easy to erect, with the potential to be in place for as little as a few weeks, perhaps coinciding with a high profile sporting event such as the World Cup, or much longer until a permanent use is found for the derelict site.

The architects have designed the structure in collaboration with Arup, as a modular system using lightweight carbon fibre. The adaptability of the design allows it to accommodate fewer players, or to be installed on awkwardly shaped sites.

AL_A, along with partners, are looking to finance roll out of the scheme across London.
